How to save the oceans (and your skin) with La Mer Blue Heart

I try my best not to be political on TLF. After all, it is a platform for everyone and I don’t want it to be perceived any other way. However, for the last couple of weeks we have seen an ongoing debate about climate change, pollution, how to save our planet’s resources and what we need to be doing as a mutual effort to make this happen. Apparently; not everyone feels that it is their responsibilities to take action and leave the planet a better place for next generation.

I would lie if I said that I’m perfect in this area myself. A lot more could be done in my everyday life. But I try my best to make conscious decisions and it is with great pleasure I get to present one of the (many) actions taken where a premium globally recognised Beauty brand actually lead the way. As a consumer it always feel great when I can combine my love for beauty with doing good for the planet or for us living here.

Let us start from the beginning. You see, for over a decade LA Mer has shown commitment to protect the oceans and its habitats. It comes as no surprise to me as the brand itself is the pure definition of The Ocean. Every year, the company make a visible effort (in the shape of a national campaign) to collect funds for global and local marine projects. People employed with the company also engage hands on to make sure that the projects are developing in the right direction with cleaning beaches and diving to have a look at coral reefs etc. They call it Beauty in Action and this is the part that really excites me! During the launch luncheon for the 2017 La Mer Blue Heart Oceans Fund campaign we actually got invited to come and dive with the team and see with our own eyes where to money goes and what has already been done. I’ve never heard of any other brand who offers the same. That’s commitment!

Now, for this year, La Mer has partnered up with Project 0 – a very cool new global network with one single objective: to restore and protect the ocean. Participating together for the network are celebrities, politicians, business leaders and world renowned ocean experts with one goal to have 30% of the ocean under protection by 2030. They are focusing on everything maritime from coral reefs to mangrove forests, fisheries and even lake environment. Maybe you didn’t know this – but the ecosystem of these places is crucial for us human beings as well as for the wildlife that lives there.

During a beautiful and educational luncheon, invited guests got to learn more about this year’s campaign called La Mer Blue Heart. Through “art, awareness and connectivity” the campaign to raise funds is twofold: globally, you will bee the 2017 limited edition jar of the iconic Creme de La Mer where both the jar and the box itself has been used as a canvas for the most beautiful watercolour theme. Personally, I love this edition because the greens reminds me of the shade the water has right here in the region. The jar launched in the Middle East on June 1st, right in time to celebrate the global World Oceans Day, coming up on June 8th.

The second part of the fund raising will take place as an art exhibition with 50 works of art installations to be unveiled all over NYC. They will all be available for sale through an auction where 100% of the net proceeds will benefit the Blue Heart Fund and Project 0.

Whenever you purchase one of these limited edition Creme de La Mer jars, you take part in this very important and charitable cause. And let’s face it – you get a fabulous product to use as well!

So what is Creme de La Mer and why do people rave about it?

To be honest, I have detected two different opinions: either you swear about this cream, you are probably a loyal customer to the brand and the cream has been in your collection for years. Or. You look at the marketing side of things, read Miracle Broth, think its something “too good to be true” and shy away from the hefty price tag. I’ve never met anyone who fall in between these categories 🙂

It’s not my place to tell you what to think. I want to present some facts and let everyone see for themselves if this is a product that would fit them!

The story of the brand is well known: Dr. Max Huber, an Aerospace Scientist, suffered severe burns after an accident in his lab and devoted his life to try and produce a product that would be able to heal his skin. It took 6000 experiments and 12 years before he launched Creme de La Mer with its Miracle Broth.

Personally, I always shy away from anything with words as miracle, magical or unicorn in it. It feels a bit suspicious haha. But La Mer do disclose what’s inside of their Miracle Broth to make us see if the ingredients will be of help to our skin conditions:

“A blend of sea kelp, calcium, magnesium, potassium, lecithin, iron, Vitamins, C, E and B12, plus oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower go into the broth, but its “miracle” lies in the way these ingredients are combined – a process called biofermentation. This 3-4 month process results in a whole far greater than the sum of its parts, with the power to transform the skin’s appearance.”

Let’s do a little break down of these ingredients:

  • Sea Kelp (only sourced through sustainable harvest) is believed to hold a lot of energy in their cells. combined with the other ingredients and released via a process of biofermentation, that energy will benefit the healing of our skin cells. Kelp is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and helps to regulate the texture of our skin if digested as it provides our thyroid glands with extra iodine.
  • Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium All vital parts of the body and they work to keep the skin moisturised and hydrated, which is important to heal damaged tissue and make fine lines less noticeable.
  • Lecithin is one of our natural antioxidants derived from egg yolks or soybeans. It is used in cosmetics as a natural emulsifier and can assist carry other active ingredients down the layers of tissue.
  • Vitamin C, E and B12 Oh where do I begin! Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid is a preservative and antioxidant well established to work against discoloration and hyperpigmentation. Vitamin E also known as Tocopherol is the strongest antioxidant for topical application. It protects and heals blood vessels and well as tissue. It assists with damage caused by pollution and UVA. Vitamin B12 is actually found in sea kelp and is a star ingredients for food and beauty! Some of the known benefits for the skin are the assistance to reduce face blemishes, dryness or cracked skin and acne. It effectively repairs skin cells while regenerating and repairing your skin so it stays bright and clear.

I could continue with the rest of the INCI-list with the risk of boring you all. I want to say this: many seem to think that the original Creme de La Mer is too rich for them. It is, as you can see from the picture, a super dense, thick cream. Let me then remind you that in the range (sadly not in limited edition packaging) there is no less than 4 other options of moisturisers, all containing the Miracle Broth but with completely different textures! I have already written about the amazing La Mer the moisturizing Soft Lotion here on TLF and I also warmly recommend the Gel Cream. You have options!

With this review I hope you’ll get the chance of picking up the La Mer Blue Heart edition as is makes such an impact. Locally, the company have made it possible to restore the coral reefs outside of the coast line of Fujairah, one of our Emirates. It makes me proud to work with a company that takes these actions seriously and have pledged to be in it for the long run.

Happy premium-pampering shopping! As I’m turning 35 this month, I have my eyes set on the ultra-luxurious Genaissance de la Mer SerumThe only problem with that is that I could also wish for a new bag…but oh, I wish! ♥

    1. Hahahaha Kelly I’m always nervous to write about La Prairie knowing you’re the expert. La Mer on the other hand is very much my home court. I’m so proud of the brand for committing to a long term achievement to save the oceans. All brands can do a little something, it doesn’t have to be grand to be good. And yes, Luxury enabler…maybe I should write that on my business card?! Hahahaha, xx
