My lips are not sealed!

Although I decided when starting up this site that it shouldn’t be a platform for coming down on products (what doesn’t work for me might be fantastic for someone else) I still find it important to discuss it, when certain products or ingredients are being plain bad for the skin.

I like perfumes, and skincare and I’m a little (a lot) obsessed with everything one can put on their lips. Why is that? Simply because it doesn’t matter how much water I drink; my lips will always be dehydrated, flakey and in the condition of looking old. I’ve had old lips since I was a kid!

I wish to have lips that are non-flakey, hydrated, plump, without lines and with a smooth texture that makes all lipsticks look good. Yes, emphasising “wish”.

In order to achieve that, I need to drink plenty of water (duh!) and use great products appropriated for my skin and lips; exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and not forget to treat them during nighttime as well.

In the picture you ca see Vaseline. I’m coming down on this. Note that Vaseline is a product brand, founded in 1872, but its main ingredient is Petroleum jelly.

This is a derivate of oil refining, and as such not a sustainable product, not eco-friendly if you will. That however is not my main concern. It is the jelly itself.

Petroleum jelly can be produced in several grades of purity, or rather impurity. Discussions have been made regarding the safety level of purity. I’m not taking a side on that one. My concern is how it works, or not works! The jelly is a water repellant and non-water soluble product that only sits on the very top of your skin. It can’t penetrate your skin at all and seals your lips with a thick barrier that prevents the skin from attracting moisture from the air of loosing moist in a normal, healthy way.  It doesn’t assist collagen production or helps the skin to maintain its moist. A number of sources let us know about Vaseline. This article by the Huffington Post is one of them.

And it forces you do touch up over and over again to get that false feeling of having smooth lips.

Please do your lips a favour and treat them nice. I use a lovely lip-scrub from Lush to gently exfoliate. Then I have an arsenal of amazing products to coat, not seal my lips with. You will have the chance to meet them all as we go along!

In the middle picture above you’ll see Nuxe Rêve de Miel® Lip moisturizing stick. Listen to this: the ingredients list holds honey, sunflower seed oil, beeswax, vegetable oil, sweet almond oil and shea butter, among other very nice things! It certainly makes me feel good inside and it makes my lips feel and look great!

Fall is coming and colder weather for many means dry lips. Take a minute or two to choose something good for yourself ♥
