SkinCeuticals to the rescue!

The weather here in Dubai in December can only be described as Schizophrenic. Today, it is raining cats and dogs and with that, the entire city is suddenly covered in mud…because, you know, we live in a sandbox.

For my skin, it is challenging times. Winter in the Middle East is not humid but colder than in the summer, rain and sunshine come and go and the air condition is now blasting with heat. My skin is always dehydrated, but I think right now, it has reached a new record! With this comes the balance of keeping it moisturized without breaking out, and its not an easy task with sensitive skin!

My adult acne is very mild, but the few lumps and bumps I get (mainly on my jawline and neck) hurt and they’re not in any condition to be extracted. The only thing that helps is to locally treat them with some well blended acids.

Enter: SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense. Now, lets start with the brand. When we moved to Dubai, SkinCeuticals was a treat to behold as I had not seen it in Scandinavia. Founded by the now legendary, late Sheldon R. Pinnell, MD it has always been the leading authority when it comes to antioxidants and Investigating Dermatology. A graduate from both Yale and Harvard Universities, Dr. Pinnell spent over 40 years connected to the Duke University Medical School Faculty where he held different roles, such as Professor of Dermatology and Chief of Dermatology at the Duke University Medical Centre. When he founded SkinCeuticals it was to provide the market with a cosmeceutical range of clear, effective serums with highly concentrated ingredients; all of which was peer-approved and proved to work in the field of Dermatology. What made the brand a success was the fact that the products where comprehensive and easy to work with. They provided safe and stable results built on clear science and I have honestly never tried a product by SkinCeuticals  that didn’t rock my boat!

in July 2013, when Dr. Pinnell died, he had left the company and the field of research with over 200 published scientific articles and more than 10 personal patent, where the Duke University Antioxidant Patent still serves as bench mark for topical antioxidant treatments and is licensed  exclusively for SkinCeuticals.

My first love from the brand was their Blemish + Age Defense treatment because of the balance the blend offers. first of all, the liquid is oil-free. You all know I love a great face oil, but I prefer not to add oil as a spot treatment on acne prone areas. It somehow feels backwards.

The blend consists of:

  • Salicylic Acid 1,5%
  • Dioic Acid 2%
  • LHA 0,3%
  • Glycolic Acid 3,5%
  • Citric Acid 0,5%

I always recommend acids for clearing up the skin and promote a faster cell turnover process. For me, an AHA like Glycolic Acid works well for prevention and I think it’s great that the Blemish + Age Defense hold such high concentration of it. However, for really clearing out those hard lumps of almost cystic acne I need a bit of BHA as its the only ingredient capable of cleaning the pores from the inside and out. With 1,5% Salicylic Acid I feel that this product really does what it promises without making acne treatment a complicated process. The formulation is anti-ageing while it prevent the formation of adult acne. Prevention and Treatment in one!

I also like the packaging. Housed in a dark coloured glass bottle to keep the liquid free from harm it delivers with a hygienic dropper for easy and precise application. The label as well as the design of the entire range feels medical and serious, it is anonymous on the shelf and unisex. I like the fact that it doesn’t scream I’ve got adult acne! It is modest.

When my acne occurs, I use this treatment twice a day on the spots that needs to be cleared up and I can see results already after one night sleep. Usually, the clogged pore will be healed within 2-3 days and the growth of bacteria gone. With this product I never feel the urge to do any extraction which also gives me fewer problems with scarring or dark spots as a result of damage to the skin. I’m not good at leaving black-heads alone, I’ll admit that, but I try my best to not touch and squeeze on my acne.

I absolutely recommend this product and have repurchased it many times. It is a staple in my collection and a trusted treatment suitable even for mature skin. ♥
