What happened with my test-run of the products by NINNI: Created by You? I have already written an in-depth Brand presentation over here, which I really think you should take a look at before you read my review. Simply because not many start-ups are this well founded when it comes to vast knowledge about product developing.
I have always said and will always say that I won’t put anything on my largest organ, the skin, that is just an Instagram hype or come in a pretty packaging. Everything we apply to our skin makes its way into our body, our cells and blood. We need to choose and source wisely and with NINNI this is the corner stone:
With the founder’s education within Chemical Engineering and a background working for large beauty companies within the industry, NINNI believes in decoding the ingredients and making it easier for the consumer to make their choices. It is not an “organic” mumbo-jumbo brand. The products made by this UK based company only uses well established and scientifically proven ingredients for the best results. It is natural and clean.
Now, I have had the chance to try out three products by this amazing brand. A Day cream and a Night cream – both unscented – as well as the Night cream with Lemon & Rosemary. Let’s take it one by one.
The system and Ingredients
NINNI let’s the customer create the products by making some active choices along the way. Obviously, you don’t need to have in-depth knowledge about skin health and skin-beneficial ingredients as the science has already been calculated and tested out for you. You start with a basic cream filled with Rose Hip fruit oil, Thistle oil and Cranberry seed oil. It is completely unscented (in the terms that there are no added essential oils or perfume to the mix).
Then you need to decide if you want a day- or a night cream. First up is My Day: face cream.
It is designed to prevent the skin from premature ageing, developing dark spots and fine lines and keep your skin at balance throughout the day. It holds both Glycerin and Squalene to keep the skin in a great condition.
The cream shall also protect your skin from ROS; Reactive Oxygentive Species, also known as free radicals as well as keeping it clear and therefore holds some of the best known ingredients for it, including Vitamin A, E and C doubled up with Coenzyme Q10 and Salicylic acid.
Wether you choose a day- or a night cream you’ve got one final choice to make: the scent and it’s properties.
Lemon & Rosemary is supposed to work uplifting for the senses while Lavender & Chamomile holds more soothing and relaxing properties. You can also decide to stay with the unscented version which I think is quite fabulous and that’s what I opted for! These days it’s rather difficult to find skincare that is really completely unscented so I was curious of the product.
Although being a UK-based company, NINNI has got Scandinavian roots and I think you can spot it on the packaging. It is practical; white and sleek and with an air-tight pump dispenser (the company doesn’t believe in jars) to keep bacterias at bay and the label is not ornamented at all. It is always the same when it comes to Scandinavian skincare design I think. Just compare it to the labels of Estelle & Thild, Ole Henriksen or Sachajuan. Simple bottle and simple logo. Done and done. It works absolutely fine, although the princess in me wouldn’t have said no to a more fancier design to match those really great ingredients.
The feeling and scent
My Day; unscented glides on easily to my skin. I wouldn’t say it’s unscented in the terms of not having a scent at all. It smells quite heavily of something that reminds me of “pharmaceutical”, almost like a prescribed salve. Don’t misunderstand me here, I love the non-scent-scent! As the pharmaceutical-dermatological nerd I am, this scent really agrees with me. Once it’s applied, the scent just vanish into the air. The first time I used the cream I was a bit unsure of the texture. I’m not used to add thick creams under my makeup and I felt like it was a bit thick. After a week or so, I started to first apply two drops of the Jurlique face oil underneath the day cream and it made the whole experience easier for me. It felt like the cream absorbed faster into my skin. After a while, I just got lazy and started adding the face oil drops into my cream, mix them together in the palm of my hands and just apply – with superb results!
Some would say: hey, then it’s no longer and unscented day cream at all! Others would simply say that layering skincare products in the hopes that they will preform the way we want, is simply what we do! For me personally, this made the trick and prevented my skin from looking shiny as I never use thick day creams for that particualr sake. I made it work very well and the skin felt hydrated and fresh all day long even under both primer and foundation.
Over to the second product: My Night; unscented. Same packaging, pump and bottle. What I really love about the company is that the full inci-list is disclosed on the back of the bottle. I don’t need to save any paper carton and I’m not given any of these nonsense “we are so special and our inventions are so special so we rather not tell you what’s inside”. NINNI knows their oils, peptides, vitamins and antioxidants. No, they are not inventing the wheel twice but use trusted ingredients that work. I as a consumer am more than welcome to read the fine print. It’s all there. Amazing, in my opinion!
The feeling and scent
This is actually quite funny, you should have seen my face when I took my first pump and discovered that the night cream is even thicker than the day cream! I thought “Oh no, I will wake up with a greasy face and hairline and get all those pimples on my cheeks and jawline as the cream would smear into my pillow case”. I got a bit scared, I admit that.
But testing is learning and I was proven wrong. The night cream is my very favourite and I have now run out of it, which I can tell you very rarely happens as I’ve got so many options to choose from! It has simply been sitting at my night stand and the very lush, thick salve sinks in beautifully to my skin. It even makes my hands feel ready for bed. My night is designed to hydrate and rejuvenate, use those precious hours of sleep to rebuild and strengthen the skin. With cell communication properties, peptides, Glycerin and Squalene it keeps the skin moist. Both Salicylic and Citric Acid together with vitamin A gives the skin a nice soft chemical peel to get rid of dead skin cells and unclog the pores. Hyaluronic Acid and peptides plump up the skin, addresses those fine lines and make the skin feel elastic. Best of all: when I wake up after sleeping with this cream, I’ve got no shine or excess oil to my face?! I don’t really know why, since I obviously always use some kind of oil-based serum underneath the cream, but that’s the way it goes. I’m very happy with the look and feel after a good night’s sleep on this darling. The scent is the same unscented-pharmacy one as with the day cream and I like it equally much.
Even though I had opted for no added essential oils for this time around, NINNI kindly sent me a bottle of the My Night; Lemon & Rosemary just so I could review the sensoric experience for you guys. I have not been using it on my face – yet – but on my hands and the scent is really super fresh and uplifting! I thought it would be too strong for me as I’m not an herb-kind of girl, but it works extremely well and as I’ve now run out on my unscented version, this one will take the spot on my night stand.
Katarina, the founder of NINNI is currently working to extend the line of her products. She seems to be full of ideas and you can really feel that this is not about earning the big bucks or becoming an Instagram darling; she really put a lot of effort into the science and is staying true to the basic concept of decoding ingredients to make it easier for her customers to pick and choose. This summer, for the June Edition, NINNI could report that they were to be a part of the Glossybox.se’s beauty box. Such an accomplishment for a start-up company and it shows that the industry is monitoring the brand closely. I’m very happy to have been given the chance to test these products out. I rate them and I’m looking forward to see what more products will be released in the future. ♥
